Are there any bread machines without Teflon pans?

On average we receive about 1-2 messages a week with the question if we can recommend a baking machine that does not use a teflon form. One sometimes wonders whether we should not tell everyone to send these comments to all manufacturers of bakery machines (a small tip) so that they can push what they would call less risky pans.

Instead of being individually responsible for everything, we thought it would be better to finally write an article about this evil, mass-produced thing that has caused so many people to care about the lives of their families. We understand perfectly!

Teflon is a brand of polytetrafluoroethylene (yes, full mouth), also called PTFE.  It is used in almost every dish imaginable – in pots, pans, baking trays, etc. This material is valued for its ability to resist sticking, making cooking and cleaning less tiring. It has been in use since the 1940s, when, after the Second World War, many of the new technologies from that time were applied in everyday life. If you see verbs today as non-stick in kitchen utensils, chances are they are made of PTFE.

The problem with PTFE is that its harmful effects on health have been recognised. It is precisely when PTFE is heated above a certain temperature that its molecules begin to decompose and release a toxic gaseous by-product called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Animal studies have shown that PFOA increases the risk of liver, testicular, breast and pancreatic cancer, which you can read here if you wish.

So if heat and PTFE don’t go together, we don’t have to cook with PTFE, right? Which makes you think: Why do manufacturers still produce dishes – and our favourite bread bakers – with them? Well, it’s mostly about exposure levels. We know that PFOA increases the risk of various forms of cancer, but does the PTFE cooking program expose us to dangerous levels of PFOA? That’s what the American Cancer Society says: Apart from the possible risk of flu-like symptoms due to inhalation of vapours from an overheated Teflon-coated pan, there is no known risk to humans from the use of Teflon-coated cookware.

However, the unknown risks are hardly reassuring, and we suspect that most people therefore prefer to stay away from this material. But even after many reviews of the machine bread, we still haven’t found a machine bread in North America that we can make a 100% safe and PTFE-freebread. We have heard about a new material called Biolon, which turns out to be a ceramic-based coating that does not contain PFOA. But we now believe that it is again an artificial product that deserves as much attention as PTFE.

What can you do to protect your family when using baking machines? Fluoroplastics can withstand temperatures up to 260°C / 500°F in prolonged use. Therefore, the obvious solution can be to minimize the risk by ensuring that the cooker does not reach a dangerous temperature without smoke. The good news is that it is very simple. Bread, in particular, is traditionally baked in an oven at a temperature of around 175°C, which is much lower than the maximum temperature of 260°C. We have also noticed that in many bakeries, bread is baked at , even at less than (300°F and lower), and you can also adjust the temperature. Baking appliances bake bread at a lower temperature because the room is much smaller than traditional ovens and so the heating elements are closer together. This creates an environment that requires less heat for cooking. With cooking appliances, you really don’t have to worry about toxic fumes coming out of the non-stick pan, unlike pots and pans, for example, where you can’t precisely control the temperature.

In the following we will introduce you to some of the best baking machines available in North America that can set their own baking temperature and temperature range. Keep in mind that all these cooking machines are cooked at a temperature of 300°F or less.
